Production and Production Design Plans

For our music video project, I’m acting as producer and art director.

For my role as a producer, I’m keeping up contact with everyone in the group via group text messages and making sure we’re all on track for picking an artist, song, locations and so on. I’m gathering together all the paperwork that I know or think we’ll need and printing copies to keep together in a single binder that will be dedicated to organizing every and all hard copies of things related to the project.

One plan we’re currently discussing is working with an artist located in Boone, NC. If we decide to go with this artist, I will also keep track of all the involved expenses, whether those are related to gas money used to get to Boone or expenses involved with asking the artist to come to Wilmington.

As an art director, I’m also working on designs for the set, costumes and make-up. Right now, I’m mainly focused on the design of the set based on our possible songs. I have several rough sketches done for different sets as they relate to different songs that we’re considering. I also have some designs that are versatile enough to be used for any of the songs we’re looking at.

One of the rough designs is the creation of a space where we can make a type of shadow play from behind a sheet using ourselves and other found props. I made this plan in hopes that it could be versatile enough that we wouldn’t be limited by the location or song in case one of our first plans falls through.

Our current plan is to meet and discuss the different design ideas and pick which artist and song we most want to work with based on the combination of preference to the sound, situation and designs.

In response to "From Art House to 'Microcinema'"

I think it's interesting to read about the community at the heart of small films. While in the beginning of the reading, it seemed to me like the author was simply complaining that all the small theaters had gone big, as I continued, it became evident that what they were missing wasn't the structure of a small theater with obscure films, but was more along the lines of the sense of togetherness and art that was brought on my art house film screenings.
I do like the idea of small gatherings, not quite festivals, for unknown films that have a harder time marketing themselves and making it into the large movie complexes. I think it provides a space for artists to experiment, which is an extremely important aspect of creating art. While the mega movie complexes still have their place in film, I think it's definitely worth the effort to try and keep the vibe from art house cinema and "microcinema" alive.
